Earth Week Celebration – April 18 – 22

April 22nd is Earth day. We will be celebrating Earth Week, April 18 – 22 . The school celebrates activities to increase awareness and stress the importance of taking care of our Earth, applying the 4 Rs, “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse and Rethink!”  We are having the following activities to increase awareness and stress the importance of taking care of our Earth.

Friday, April 29th at 10:30am: Environmental Defenders Assembly (due to the Company’s availability in schedule). Leads students to identify environmental problems and possible solutions kids can do themselves to reduce pollution. Covers Four R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink(new).

Essay Contest: Grades 5th – 8th. Due Wednesday, April 20th. (Mandatory assignment)
Write an essay explaining the importance of taking care of our earth with the concepts of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle”. The following standard essay format must be followed: The opening paragraph is the introduction; no details should be in this paragraph. You should focus on introducing the concept. The next paragraph explains how we reuse, reduce and recycle things and why. These three concepts can be developed each in one paragraph of their own, extending your essay to 5 paragraphs. The last paragraph closes your essay by summarizing and adding your personal thoughts. (Counts for Social Studies and Language Arts Grade)

Poster Contest: Grades K – 4th. Due Wednesday, April 20th. (Mandatory Assignment). Minimum poster size is 11” X 14”, which is half of a standard poster paper. The maximum size would be to use the entire poster sheet, which is 22” X 28” and easily found at any .99 cent stores. The Poster must reflect the theme of “Take Care of our Earth: by Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling”. The following criteria will be used to judge: creativity, content, and student input. (Counts for Social Science Grade) Note: sticking recyclable products on a poster is not creative!!

*Optional Sculpture Contest: Open to Grades TK – 8th. Due Thursday, April 21st .
Make a model or sculpture with recyclable products. Use paper products, cardboard, cans, bottles, poster boards to create an imaginative sculpture. (please note: Styrofoam is NOT recyclable material). Creativity and originality will be criteria used to judge. (some examples: crocodile out of egg carton; American flag out of soda cans; race car model out of soda bottles; vase and flowers out of bottle, cardboard and tissue; etc… ) May use paint to finish creation and give it extra touch! Please limit size of sculpture to something that can be carried by student.)
